It’s slightly under-tested for the Windows platform, but the performance is simply irresistible. It’s lightweight and fast – albeit still relatively new. Today, more VPN providers are hopping on with this protocol. The availability of WireGuard on PIA deserves a special mention. Oh, and despite some claims to the contrary, using any VPN (not just PIA) won’t remove your game lag in most cases. This extra isn’t an issue for most users, although gamers will begrudge every additional millisecond added. The overhead added only tacks on around 20ms or so in most cases. If you are concerned that using a VPN may increase lag, the test results above also indicate that this won’t be too much of a problem if you use PIA. Besides South Africa (which is typically slow for most VPN service providers), the other locations offer sufficient bandwidth for streaming and gaming. Overall though, the speeds obtained are generally fast across the board and very usable. This discrepancy is indicative that servers may be under heavier than expected loads. One surprising aspect is their generally higher upstream speeds as compared to downstream. Honestly, PIA offers speed test results that are a bit mixed. PIA lays out its no-logging claim in black and white in its privacy policy. One of the biggest fears of using a VPN service is that they may quietly keep logs. Naturally, the latter is a preferred choice since they are private.
With PIA, you can choose to keep that, define your nameservers (such as Google or Cloudflare DNS), or use PIA DNS servers. Security-wise, this isn’t a good idea since that puts more control in the ISP’s hands. Many of us tend to live with the nameservers assigned to us by our Internet Service Provider (ISP). The key takeaway here is that, again, the option is in your hands. PIA offers the choice of either SOCKS5 or Shadowsocks, each of which has some advantages. This feature works by connecting you to a PIA server and then routing again through a proxy server, essentially doubling the IP mask.
If you’re paranoid and want more assurance from a VPN, use PIA’s proxy routing. While this isn’t unique to PIA, it helps block malware, ads, and trackers from your device. MACE is PIA’s implementation of a security blocker. If your connection with the PIA server is cut for any reason, you’ll find yourself isolated from the net – preventing any potential data exposure. If enabled, the VPN kill switch will prevent anything from being routed outside the VPN tunnel.
